A-law is pleased to announce it will be hosting an evening event on 1st August 2019 on the subject of ‘Using the Law to Help Animals’. As part of the event, we are welcoming special guest, Michelle Richner, from Tier im Recht (TIR) Switzerland, to discuss her impactful work. Which will be followed up by a panel discussion including Edie Bowles and Paula Sparks, on how we can use the law to help animals.
Tier im Recht (TIR) has been advocating for strong legal protection of animals since 1996. The main purpose of TIR’s actions is the continuous improvement of the human-animal relationship in a legal, ethical and social sense.
Dr. iur. Michelle Richner works for TIR in a legal capacity. Michelle has co-written the two guidebooks “Tier im Recht transparent” (concerning pets in the law) and “Pferd im Recht transparent” (concerning horses in the law) as well as the commentary “Schweizer Tierschutzstrafrecht in Theorie und Praxis” (regarding Swiss animal welfare-related criminal law in general). In 2014, Michelle successfully completed her dissertation on the subject of pet keeping from the point of view of animal welfare under criminal law.
Paula Sparks is the Chairperson of the UK Centre for Animal Law (A-Law).
Edie Bowles is a solicitor and co-founder of Advocates for Animals, the UK’s first animal law firm.
